This website address is: https://jondron.ca. It may have been reached via a few alternative addresses, most likely https://jondron.org, but that’s the one you are most likely looking at now. The server on which it sits is based in Canada and is subject to Canadian law. It is owned and maintained by Jon Dron. I might conceivably invite a guest to post or maintain it at some point in the future, but that’s never happened yet and probably won’t ever happen.
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection (also because it’s just plain interesting!).
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should maybe avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included, unless you don’t mind that being shown. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data as well as information about your camera, from images on the website.
Cookies
The only cookies this site will set are those needed for it to operate. Though it is possible that embedded contents from other sites might try to set their own cookies, this site doesn’t do anything intentionally intrusive with any of them. Feel free to block anyone else’s cookies, but please don’t block the ones set from here because things will probably go wrong.
These are the cookies that may be set:
- If you leave a comment on this site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
- If you visit the login page, the site will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
- When you log in, the site will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
- If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
It is possible that one or two session cookies may be used to maintain state information from one page to the next (I don’t honestly know – it’s a WordPress thing), but there’s no possible harm in that, and they’ll soon disappear.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. Watch out for social media sites, in particular. I’ve tried to limit them as much as I can but, if I’m using their content (e.g. Twitter, YouTube) then there’s a good chance they are tracking you.
Who I share your data with
I don’t share your data with anyone (though sites for any embedded content might grab some of their own and I guess I could be legally required to do so). If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email but, as I’m the only one who has an account here, that’s probably not something you should worry about.
How long I retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. Also, I find them interesting and valuable. Feel free to make comments, if you are a human being and as long as you are genuinely interested in what you are commenting on. Please, don’t spam the site, don’t try to advertise goods or services, and don’t comment unless you care about the content. I reserve the right to not allow any content you post to be shown on the site. Everything here should be moderated by me.
For users that register on my website (if any – I’m not planning to allow it so this almost certainly doesn’t apply to you), I would also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. Any such users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators (that would be me) can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data I hold about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that I erase any personal data that I hold about you (really not a lot – see above). This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where we send your data
Visitor comments are almost always checked through an automated spam detection service, most likely Akismet, which is provided via WordPress. I get to moderate what it allows through.
