The emoticon is nearly 30 years old – hard to believe it is that old but also hard to remember a time when we didn’t have them.
Emoticon technology is very soft indeed but it has gained a few tweaks along the way, and not just the classic additions invented by Dave Barry. As I type this I can choose from a load of smarter-looking versions like this
